Synthetic Chemist

Analysis review scientist – NMR & UPLC-MS interpretation

About Chemify

Chemify is creating a future where important molecules, drugs and currently unimaginable new materials are instantly accessible; thereby radically increasing the speed of innovation, quality of life, and reach of humanity. The company is building the infrastructure to digitize chemistry for the design, discovery and synthesis of new molecules with the desired function and properties instantly and on-demand. Chemify has built a platform that combines purpose-built programming languages, robotics, AI, and the world's largest and continuously growing database of chemical programs to accelerate chemical discovery to new, transformative heights.

Chemify is supported by some of the best investors from Silicon Valley and across the world, including Triatomic Capital, BlueYard Ventures, DCVC, Founders Fund, and others.

What we offer

You'll join our analysis review team interpreting 1H-NMR and UPLC-MS data generated by our automated synthesis platform, playing a direct and critical role in keeping our chemistry pipeline moving. You'll also get exposure to a wide variety of organic chemistry reactions passing through the platform — genuinely interesting territory if you enjoy the puzzle of structure elucidation. This is an entry point into the synthetic chemistry industry, with full training provided. Working a shift pattern that includes evenings and weekends, you'll also earn a competitive uplift for unsocial hours on top of your base salary.

Job purpose

As our Analysis Review Scientist, you will review and interpret 1H-NMR and UPLC-MS data produced by our automated chemistry platform, confirming that reactions and purifications have produced the expected outcome, flagging anomalies for further investigation, and generating high-quality reports. This is a computer-based role, working with digital spectra and data files rather than at the bench. The role follows a structured, repeatable process across a high volume of samples each shift, and forms part of a rota that includes evenings and weekends to keep pace with round-the-clock synthesis.

Who we are looking for

We're looking for an entry-level scientist — ideal for a recent chemistry graduate or someone early in their career — who is comfortable with focused, detail-oriented work performed to a consistent standard. You'll have a working knowledge of 1H-NMR and mass spectrometry from your studies or lab experience, a methodical approach to spotting when something doesn't match expectations, and the flexibility to work a rota that includes evenings and weekends. Strong communication matters too: you'll work closely with our synthesis program manager team on interpreting outcomes, and may occasionally liaise with the operations team when troubleshooting instrument or pipeline issues.

Key responsibilities

• Data interpretation: Review 1H-NMR spectra and UPLC-MS traces against expected reaction and purification outcomes, confirming success or diagnosing likely products and where a reaction may have gone wrong, to help inform future runs.

• Volume and turnaround: Process a high throughput of samples each shift to keep pace with the automated synthesis platform, maintaining consistent accuracy and speed.

• Shift coverage: Work a rota that includes evenings and weekends, providing near-continuous data turnaround for the chemistry team.

• Escalation: Flag ambiguous or unexpected spectra to senior scientists for further review, and report issues with the software platform or automated processing and verification steps.

• Record keeping: Maintain accurate, consistent records of interpretations and decisions in line with SOPs.

• Quality and compliance: Follow SOPs and quality procedures for data review and support timely investigation of flagged discrepancies or audit findings.

• Continuous improvement: Feedback patterns or recurring issues you spot to help refine interpretation guidelines over time, collaborating cross-functionally in line with one of Chemify's core values.

Qualifications and experience

Essential

• Education: PhD in synthetic chemistry, or equivalent experience — no prior industry experience required

• Technical grounding: Working knowledge of LC/HPLC/UPLC data, including mass spectrometry and UV/Vis and/or ELSD detection, gained through study or lab work

• NMR experience: Experience interpreting 1H-NMR data, with some basic structure elucidation experience expected

• Organic chemistry knowledge: A solid understanding of organic chemistry, to make sense of the reactions under review and anticipate likely side products or impurities

• Working style: Comfortable with repetitive, detail-oriented work carried out to a consistent standard

• Flexibility: Able to work a rotating shift pattern that includes evenings and weekends

• Communication: Good written and verbal communication, both for recording findings clearly and discussing reaction outcomes with senior scientists

Desired (not essential)

• 2D NMR interpretation: Experience interpreting 2D NMR data (e.g. COSY, HSQC, HMBC) for more complex structure elucidation

• Software: Experience with MestreNova or similar NMR processing software — full training will be provided if not

Compensation and working pattern

A competitive base salary, plus an uplift for unsocial hours worked as part of your shift pattern, and enhanced annual leave on top of the standard entitlement. Full training is provided from day one; after this initial period, the role offers the flexibility to work partially or fully remotely.

Growth opportunities

This is an entry point into our analysis review team, with a clear path toward more senior roles. There's also potential to get involved in building out the automation of our analytical data processing and interpretation work, in collaboration with our software team, as the platform grows.

Location

Initial training will be based at our Glasgow site. After this, the role offers flexibility to work partially remotely.
