Location
This role will be based at the company’s manufacturing site at OakBank Industrial Estate, Garscube Road, Glasgow, G20 7LU.
PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES:
Reporting to the Dispensary/ Inventory and Materials Manager, the main tasks of this role (along with the wider dispensary team) are to be a key member of the team in efficiently executing critical manufacturing and development tasks to ensure high-quality, reproducible, high-throughput and safe chemical manufacturing. The Production Chemist’s main task is to create and maintain best-in-class laboratory spaces and work closely with the operations and chemistry teams to ensure their productivity and efficiency. While working within the laboratory the Production Chemist must be observant of safety standards and operating procedures. To participate in the development of new systems and processes; maintaining standards conducive with safe laboratory working, writing SOPs, documenting changes.
The role of the dispensary team includes, but is not limited to, to maintain Chemify’s chemical inventory by following procedure(s) and SOPs pertinent to inventory use, dispensing the appropriate amount of requested chemicals as per SOPs and passing on to the synthesis team to conduct the next step of a work order. This is a critical functionality within the operations framework that directly impacts our downstream processes.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support their manager by carrying out their assigned responsibilities and duties in a timely manner and in the improvement, design and build of (new) processes to support Chemify’s product development needs.
- Support the goal of ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Will demonstrate broad levels of competence in a range of relevant scientific disciplines but will generally have a specialisation within the company and will act as a key resource within this field.
- Be able to assimilate complex concepts with ease and manage projects/ processes requiring a wide range of different techniques.
- It is expected that individuals will, from time to time, be required to assist with certain procedures that are outside the definition of their grading. As part of internal training and on-going development programmes, employees may be required to perform duties that are defined for a higher level for training purposes prior to achieving promotion. In this instance, full training and supervision will be provided for that employee to ensure that no work is compromised. Duties may be assigned by the line manager and/or CEO/COO/CTO, as appropriate.
- Be a contributing member of the Operations team, working one of several shift patterns (early, late, nightshift, weekend)
- Maintaining laboratory housekeeping (glassware, working areas)
- Maintaining laboratory equipment
- Take-on growing responsibilities during the transformation of the company from an R&D-stage organization to an operational powerhouse
- Communicating with laboratory management team to schedule maintenance tasks
- Preparation of stock solutions according to laboratory procedures
- Decanting/weighing of raw materials and final compounds
- Working with engineering technicians to ensure cross-disciplinary tasks completed
- Taking the initiative to suggest improvements to working practices
- Accurate and timely documentation of completed tasks using our own digital laboratory notebook
SUMMARY OF COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Health and Safety
- Comply with the company H&S Policy at all times.
- Follow and abide by all H&S regulations and report any deviations or improvements to the H&S Representatives/H&S Committee/Executive team.
- Participate in the creation of risk assessments and other safety documentation to ensure safe working practices are maintained in the laboratory and engineering workspace and proactively ensure these are understood prior to carrying out any laboratory work.

Quality
- Comply with the company Quality Policy at all times.
- Work with the quality group and other operations groups at Chemify to maintain a Quality Management System (QMS) that supports company growth, instils a culture of process and control across all systems and sites, works to Good Scientific Practices and is compliant with relevant ISO standards (such as ISO 9001:2015).
- Along with the Quality Unit, participate in investigations and review information and draw conclusions in support of Corrective and Preventative Action Plans (CAPA), customer complaints etc.
- Support their manager and the Quality unit to carry out timely investigation of client complaints and prepare reports and/or return products, as required.
- Participate in regulatory body and client inspections/audits of Chemify.
- Respond in a timely manner to self-inspection findings following audits by the Quality unit.
- Improve and support the implementation of Good Scientific policies, procedures and systems, including the creation of SOPs and working forms.
- Promote the use of the process approach and risk-based thinking within the work of their team and throughout Chemify.
- Engage with clients (via Business development team) to ensure that experiments are designed and implemented to meet client needs and those of appropriate regulations.
- Participate in Quality Improvement activities and communicate the importance of the QMS with their team.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Essential Qualification/ Experience/ Knowledge:
- Minimum Higher or Advanced Higher in Chemistry and HNC/HND in a Science Subject with practical laboratory experience.
- The candidate ideally has previous work or study experience in a technical role within a laboratory environment
- Able to work as part of a diverse team, interfacing with several technical and non-technical disciplines, across sites.
